Ṣadaqa jāriya · the charity that continues

Sadaqah jariyah

A well, one of the finest forms of sadaqah jariyah

Sadaqah jariyah is the charity whose reward continues after death. A well is the perfect example: as long as its water is used, the reward continues, God willing.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity (sadaqah jariyah), knowledge that benefits others, or a righteous child who prays for them.”

Narrated by Muslim, no. 1631

Sa'd ibn 'Ubada asked the Prophet (peace be upon him):

“O Messenger of Allah, the mother of Sa'd has died: which charity is best?” He replied: “Water.” So Sa'd dug a well and said: “This is for the mother of Sa'd.”

Narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 1681

Like Sa'd for his mother, you can give this well in the name of a loved one, living or departed: their name is on the sign.
