In Pakistan, a Muslim-majority country, water is also used for the ablutions before every prayer. A hand pump, an electric well with a tank or an ablution bench: projects built quickly, often in one to two weeks.

On the great island of the Indian Ocean, access to clean water is still hard for many rural families. A small hand pump, a pulley well or an electric well with taps: there is a project for every budget.

Wells in Benin

3 types ยท from $1,000

In West Africa, many villages in Benin still draw surface water far from their homes. Hand-dug wells or a deep borehole: each one serves a whole neighbourhood for years.

Which well to choose?

Hand pump, classic or electric well: which one to fund?

They all bring water close to people's homes, with the same sign and the same proof. What changes: the depth, the number of people served and how the water is drawn.

  • The hand pumpA few strokes of the lever and the water rises, with no electricity. Sturdy, quick to build and repairable on site.
  • The classic wellDug and lined with masonry, water is drawn with a bucket. The traditional village well, serving for decades.
  • The winch or pulleyA winch or a pulley lifts the bucket effortlessly: easier for children and elderly people.
  • Electric or ablutionsA pump fills a tank and water flows from taps. The ablution bench adds stools for prayer.

Sadaqah jariyah

A well, one of the finest forms of sadaqah jariyah

Sadaqah jariyah is the charity whose reward continues after death. A well is the perfect example: as long as its water is used, the reward continues, God willing.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

โ€œWhen a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity (sadaqah jariyah), knowledge that benefits others, or a righteous child who prays for them.โ€
Narrated by Muslim, no. 1631

Sa'd ibn 'Ubada asked the Prophet (peace be upon him):

โ€œO Messenger of Allah, the mother of Sa'd has died: which charity is best?โ€ He replied: โ€œWater.โ€ So Sa'd dug a well and said: โ€œThis is for the mother of Sa'd.โ€
Narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 1681

Frequently asked questions

Building a well: your questions

Another question?

A real person from our team will answer you, in English or French.

How much does it cost to build a well?

From $210 for the simplest type. The price depends on the country and the structure (depth, pump, tank) and includes everything: construction, sign, photos, videos and tracking. The price shown is the price you pay.

In which country should I build my well?

We build wells in Pakistan, in Madagascar, in Uganda, and in Benin. There is no wrong choice: pick a country close to your heart, or the type that fits your budget. Each country has its own page with its wells and build times.

Why fund a well?

Because water is used every day, by everyone: to drink, cook, wash and make ablutions. It is also one of the finest forms of sadaqah jariyah: asked about the best charity, the Prophet (peace be upon him) answered "water" (narrated by Abu Dawud, no. 1681).

How many people does a well serve?

Depending on the type and the village, from around fifty to several hundred people. The estimate for each well is shown on its page, in its key facts.

Can several of us fund a well together?

Yes: as a family, with friends or for a mosque, one donor pays for the well online and the sign can carry the group's name. Then share the tracking link with everyone.

Can I add fruit trees with my well?

Yes. On a well's page, you can add in one click fruit trees planted anonymously for a community, at a reduced price, in the same payment.
